2d Platformer Devlog #1

July 7, 2020

Hello wolves! It’s the first post of July! I only have one exam left to do in college before I’m done for six or seven weeks!

Anyways, I’ve added a lot of new things to the game! The first thing I added was a wall slide effect. If you hug a wall while falling down, you will start to slowly fall down. Pretty simple, but it makes a huge difference in a game! It still needs to be polished up because it’s not perfect yet. Like, I would like to add a mechanic where you stay still on the wall for a certain amount of time. Also, I would like to add the ability to climb up the wall. What I mean by that is if you jumping towards a block and you miss slightly, your character will grab on the ledge if there is an empty space above the block. If you don’t understand what I just said, you’ll see once I add it in.

Another thing I added was the ability to shoot! Right now, the only weapon in the game is a crossbow, but I plan on adding more in the future. When you shoot, it will fire an arrow really fast. If it hits a collider, such as an enemy or the ground, the arrow will disappear. I would like to make it so the arrow will stick to the object you shot at, so you can pick the arrow back up. If it hits an enemy, it will deal certain amount of damage. Right now, it only deals the same number of damage, but I would like to make it deal a random number of damage between two variables. So, if I set the damage between 10 and 30, the amount of damage would be a number between 10 and 30. The crossbow, or any other weapon I add, will shoot at the direct where you’re mouse cursor is at. It’s not perfect yet, because I need to make the character flip if you start aiming behind you.

On top of dealing damage, I’ve added a damage dealt indicator. If you don’t know what that means, it the damage number that shows around the enemy when you deal damage to it. Pretty cool right? It still needs more work to be done to it. I would like to also add a health bar above the enemy because it would match the damage number indicator.

Here you can see a video showcasing me shooting the crossbow and dealing damage to the poor little owl.

<video removed>

Note: The crossbow and arrow you see in the video is temporary and is going to be redone before the game comes out. The rest of the artwork is subject to change.

Well, that’s where I’m at right now. I’m still thinking of a name for the game. Once I figure out the name, these posts wont be called “2d Platformer Devlog” anymore. See you all in the next post!

Edit –  June 11, 2021 – I removed the video as it does not represent the game anymore. I’m leaving this post up though as a piece of Taming Wolves history. 😀
